Gie expo hours12/19/2023 On three separate occasions I had social media influencers within the landscape community privately tell me that their lawn care business wasn’t making any money and they needed help. but THEY ARE NOT what makes a business successful! Investing in systems and people have the biggest ROI in your business. As you know, I am not a big advocate for new, shiny, expensive equipment and trucks that inflate egos instead of profits. I’ll be honest, some things made me pretty mad. Leaving the GIE I feel more determined than ever to make a positive impact on the landscape industry. It was so cool to see so many of my students in-person, shake their hands, and take selfies □ I met dozens of fans from the podcasts, books, and training videos I’ve made the past 6 years. I spoke to an audience about the importance of building a world class Team culture and how pay-for-performance is a huge part of that. Thursday and Friday, we attended the GIE (Green Industry Expo). All the hotels around Louisville were booked so we ended up staying at Bel-Air Motel. Wednesday night we drove 5-6 hours, through Missouri, are some classic southern soul food, visited the Arch In St Louis, and then arrived near midnight in Indiana. It reminded me of the amazing individuals that are in this industry and work SO hard everyday to achieve their dreams and build successful businesses. Meeting Sam and Zach/Jessica was an absolutely joy! Truly some of the best people on earth. We also shared how to use their numbers to make a daily scoreboard for their Team, and promote individual ownership. We spoke with Zach and Jess about their need to raise their mowing prices to improve profitability and cash flow. The name of their business is motivated by their desire to share about what Christ has done for them. There we met with Zach and Jessica Darr from 116 Lawn Care. Tuesday night we drove 5+ hours to Jerseyville, Illinois. In order to improve the accountability and efficiency of his crew we talked at length about instituting pay-for-performance (P4P). Sam’s goal is to become a referee in the NHL and so he is out of town most weekends pursuing that dream (and he’s almost there). Sam has more than tripled the size of this business from last year. We visited Sam Rankin from Ankeny Lawn & Landscape. and settle in on my 5 hour flight home from Louisville.įirst, on Tuesday I flew into Iowa with my camera guy, Josh Rivas (JR). Here are some of my reflections as I look back.
